Extra Space Storage

One of my core projects while contracting for Extra Space Storage was a mobile app designed to allow customers to open facility gates and doors and unlock their Bluetooth-equipped units with their phones.

The initial concepts were hammered out in a five-day design sprint based on the book Sprint by Jake Knapp, including an interactive prototype I created from scratch in one day. After further exploration of user needs and feedback from user testing refined the UI and expanded the scope to include a "manager" version that provided at-a-glance info about a facility manager's customers and the state of their rentals.

Initial Design Sprint Prototype

The initial concepts were hammered out in a five-day design sprint based on the book Sprint by Jake Knapp. Monday through Wednesday of the design sprint were focused on figuring out the core problems we were trying to solve and the solutions we felt would be most effective. On the Thurdsay of the sprint, I built the following prototype from scratch.

Customer Prototype (Figma)

The app development progress on both Android and iOS natively, as the developers needed low-level Bluetooth access. To faciliate the process of demonstrating fnctionality and handing off design assets, I switched to using Figma for prototyping.

I prototyped the customer-facing app using Figma to facilitate user testing both for impromptu in-person sessions and through usertesting.com.

Manager Prototype (Figma)

As the process moved forward, the concept for the prototypes expanded to a "manager view" to provide manager-level control and quick access to unit and tenant information while they are moving about their facilities.
